Introduction: This presentation will bring insights from recently released Colorado State-of-the-Science report, highlighting the importance of collaborative efforts to reduce outdoor municipal water use through transformative landscape change that maintains vibrant communities. Topics will include the strength of systems thinking, joint land use planning, balancing ecosystem benefits, setting realistic expectations, targeting water use inefficiencies, and prioritizing behavioral change. The presentation will help unpack urban landscapes' complex and nuanced nature and offer lessons learned from ongoing turf replacement and related initiatives in Colorado.
Our Presenter: Jenna Battson is the Colorado Water Conservation Board's outdoor water conservation coordinator in the water supply planning section. She leads Colorado's Turf Replacement Grant Program and has worked with the 2023 Urban Landscape Conservation Task Force to identify practical ways to advance outdoor water conservation and transformative landscape change beyond turf replacement. She earned her Master's Degree in natural resources policy at CU Boulder, where she focused on water law, governance structures, and conservation strategies and collaborated on a legal publication about turf replacement in the Southwest.
