Floods pose a significant risk to human health and infrastructure in the landscapes where people live. To address flooding concerns, NJ has implemented several initiatives to acquire flood prone properties through buyout programs. While removal of properties within flood zone can protect human health and safety other challenges arise from these buyouts initiatives that can limit resilience of those landscapes. These challenges can be overcome through an ecologically centered landscape resilience approach that combines principles of engineering, ecology, and landscape architecture with social science to transform acquired properties into public assets. In this presentation, we will explore the best practices for implementing landscape resilience initiatives in flood prone areas.
Our presenters, Dr. Brooke Maslo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Ecology, Evolution, and Natural Resources at Rutgers University and an Extension Specialist in Wildlife Ecology, where she leads the Wildlife Conservation and Management Program. Her research focuses on applying scientific findings to conservation efforts, particularly linking biodiversity to ecosystem services, with her work on floodplain restoration earning multiple prestigious awards.
Jeremiah D. Bergstrom, is a licensed Landscape Architect with 25 years of experience and specializes in green infrastructure, stormwater management, and ecological restoration. He is currently a faculty member at South Dakota State University, where he teaches landscape architecture and conducts training on green infrastructure strategies.
